Winter car protection: PPF vs ceramic coating for road salt

Short answer

PPF is the only product that stops road salt and grit from chipping your paint. Ceramic coating makes salt and slush wash off easier, but it cannot stop chips. For an Ontario winter, the winning setup is PPF on the front panels that take the hits, plus coating over the whole car. Front PPF starts at $599, coating at $299.

What Ontario road salt actually does to your paint

From roughly November to April, Brampton and Mississauga roads are covered in salt, sand and gravel. At highway speed, the tires of the car ahead of you throw that mix straight at your front end. It is not just cosmetic. Every chip that breaks through the clear coat exposes bare metal, and salt water finds it within days. Once rust starts under the paint it spreads quietly, and by the time you see the bubble, the panel needs real bodywork.

The damage concentrates in the same places every winter: the front bumper, the leading edge of the hood, the front fenders, the mirrors, the rocker panels behind the front wheels, and the lower doors. The 401, 410 and 427 are the worst for it, because speed turns grit into sandblasting. A car that commutes those highways all winter takes hundreds of tiny hits a season, and the salt keeps working on every one of them. A single winter can age a front end by years. That is the problem winter protection exists to solve, and the two products people ask about solve it in very different ways.

PPF vs ceramic coating: what each one actually does

Paint protection film is a clear urethane film applied to painted panels. It is a physical barrier: salt, sand and gravel hit the film instead of your paint. The film absorbs the impact, and its self-healing top coat erases light swirls with heat. When a stone hits hard enough, the film may tear, but the paint underneath usually survives with far less damage, and that one panel can be re-filmed on its own. Read how it works in What is PPF? How paint protection film actually works.

Ceramic coating is a thin chemical layer bonded to the paint. It adds gloss, makes water bead and sheet off, and stops salt, slush, bug acids and bird droppings from bonding to the surface, so winter grime washes off with far less effort. What it does not do is stop a physical impact. A rock chip goes straight through a coating and into the paint, and then salt water has an open door to the metal underneath. Coating is a chemical shield, not armour.

The honest summary: if your question is what stops winter damage, the answer is film. If your question is what makes a winter car easier to keep clean and looking good, the answer is coating. Most of our customers end up wanting both, for different reasons, which is why the combo below is the most common winter booking we do.

Prices are before 13% HST. These are starting prices for standard materials, with no warranty included; premium film upgrades are quoted in store. Prices move with vehicle size, since a truck or large SUV needs more film and more labour than a sedan. For your exact vehicle, get your price within the hour or call 647-577-7300. Full pricing detail: How much does PPF cost in Brampton? and How much does ceramic coating cost in Brampton?

What changes the price

  • Coverage area. The obvious one: more panels means more film and more labour. Partial front covers the panels that take roughly 90% of highway damage; full vehicle covers everything.
  • Vehicle size and shape. Complex bumpers with deep curves take longer than flat ones, and a large SUV or truck simply uses more material than a sedan.
  • Paint condition. Film and coating both lock in whatever is underneath. Heavy swirling or chips should be corrected first, or you are preserving damage. Paint correction comes before protection, always, and it is priced separately.
  • Film and coating tier. Thicker films with better self-healing top coats cost more and last longer. Premium film upgrades are quoted in store, never as a fixed online price.
  • The install environment. Dust or lint trapped under film shows as bumps you can never unsee, and edges that lift after a month look worse than the chips you were trying to avoid. We install in a dust-free booth, one of only two in North America (the other is in the United States). If you are price-shopping winter protection anywhere in the GTA, ask every shop how they control dust during install. The answer tells you more than the quote does.

How long it takes and what is included

A partial front PPF install takes about half a day. A full front install takes a full day. A full vehicle wrap takes two to three days. A ceramic coating job usually takes a full day including wash, decontamination and paint prep. Every install at our shops includes a full wash and paint decontamination, a paint inspection where we flag anything that needs correcting first, computer-cut patterns for your exact vehicle, and edges tucked and wrapped so the film is nearly invisible.

After install, the care is simple: wait a few days before the first wash so the film cures, avoid pressure washers aimed directly at edges, and otherwise wash normally. Quality urethane film lasts 7 to 10 years. The self-healing top coat erases light swirls and scratches with heat, so parking in the sun fades minor marks out. When the film eventually comes off, a shop steams it away and the paint underneath looks the way it did on install day. Full lifespan detail: How long does PPF last in Ontario?

The combo most Brampton drivers end up with

PPF on the front panels that take the hits, ceramic coating over the whole car. The film does the job coating cannot do, stopping chips, and the coating does the job film does less well, making the whole car easy to wash and keeping it glossy through months of slush. It is the best value for a daily driver that commutes the 401 or 410, a new car, a lease you will be charged for excess wear on, or a dark colour that shows every chip as a white speck.

On a budget, start with partial front PPF at $599. It covers the panels that take roughly 90% of winter damage, and you can add coating later. If you can only pick one product and you drive highways daily, pick film. If your car rarely leaves the city and mostly sits in parking lots, coating alone may be enough, since chips happen at speed, not at parking-lot speeds. What neither product does

Honest limits matter when you are spending $299 or more. Neither product stops a deep dent, a parking lot collision, or vandalism, and neither hides paint damage that is already there. Film resists light scratches through its self-healing top coat, but it is paint insurance, not body armour. Coating does not replace washing: salt and grime still sit on the surface through winter, and a regular wash keeps both the film and the coating working properly. And if your paint already has chips and rust starting, protection goes on after the paint is fixed, not before. A detail and paint inspection first tells you where you stand, and it is the step most people skip and later regret.

Winter care: washing salt off film and coating

Protection does not mean you can ignore washing all winter. Salt sitting on a surface for weeks still works its way into edges and seams, and on coated cars the dirt layer hides the gloss you paid for. Wash every one to two weeks through salt season, more often after a storm. Touchless washes are fine for both film and coating. If you hand wash, use the two-bucket method and a grit guard, and never scrub dried salt off a dry panel: rinse it off first, since dragging grit across the surface is what causes swirls.

Two rules that protect the install itself: wait a few days after install before the first wash, and never aim a pressure washer directly at film edges. Otherwise wash normally all winter. A clean car in February is also the easiest way to spot a problem early, like a lifting edge or a new chip on an unprotected panel, while it is still cheap to fix.

When to book in Brampton and Etobicoke-Malton

Late October into November is the smart window: film and coating go on before the first salt, so the winter grit hits urethane and coating instead of paint. That is also our busiest stretch, so a week or two of lead time helps. But winter protection is not a one-month offer. Both products are installed indoors, so cold weather outside does not affect the job, and you can book any time from November through March. If you are already into salt season, the sooner the better: every week of commuting without protection is another week of chips.

We install PPF and ceramic coating at all three shops, Rosedale in Brampton, Veterans in Brampton, and Malton in Etobicoke, with free quotes and same-week appointments most weeks. Tell us your year, make and model and the coverage you want, and get your price within the hour, or call 647-577-7300.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does PPF protect against road salt?

Yes. PPF is a physical urethane barrier, so salt, sand and gravel hit the film instead of your paint. It is the only product that stops the chips that let salt water reach bare metal and start rust.

Does ceramic coating protect against salt?

Partly. Ceramic coating makes salt, slush and grime wash off much easier and resists chemical staining, but it is a thin chemical layer, not armour. It cannot stop a rock chip, and a chip through the coating leaves bare paint exposed to salt.

Which is better for winter: PPF or ceramic coating?

For stopping winter damage, PPF wins: it physically blocks chips. For easy washing and gloss, coating wins. Most Brampton drivers end up with both: PPF on the front panels that take the hits, and ceramic coating over the whole car.

How much does winter car protection cost in Brampton?

At Puri Heritage, partial front PPF starts at $599, full front at $999, and full vehicle at $2,950, before 13% HST. Ceramic coating starts at $299 for the exterior and $149 for the interior. These are starting prices for standard materials.

When should I get PPF before winter?

Late October into November is the smart window, so the film is on before the first salt. That is also our busiest stretch, so a week or two of lead time helps. Film can be installed all winter too, since installs happen indoors.

Can you get PPF or ceramic coating installed in winter?

Yes. Both are installed indoors at our shops, so cold weather outside does not affect the job. The film needs a few days to cure, so avoid washing for a few days after install and avoid pressure washers aimed directly at the edges.
