Stickers vs decals: what's the difference

A sticker is one printed piece: the design is printed (and ideally laminated) onto vinyl with a backing paper, and you peel and stick the whole thing. Stickers can do full colour, gradients, and photos, and they come die-cut in any shape. A decal is usually cut vinyl: the design is cut out of solid-coloured vinyl film, the background is weeded away, and the design is transferred onto the glass with a clear transfer tape. When the tape comes off, only the lettering or graphic remains, with no background edge. Decals look painted on, and because they are cut from solid film, they handle sun and weather better than printed stickers at the same price.

Practical rule: if the design is full-colour art (a logo, a Punjab map with shading, a portrait), buy a laminated sticker. If it is text or a bold graphic (your last name, Ik Onkar in gold, JATTLYF), buy a cut-vinyl decal. It will look sharper and last longer.

The popular designs, explained

• Ik Onkar (ੴ). The single most popular religious decal on our shelves. Usually gold, white or silver cut vinyl, sized for the rear windshield or rear quarter glass. Timeless and reads cleanly from a distance.
• Khanda. The Sikh emblem, most often as a small gold or chrome decal on the rear glass or a larger windshield-strip design. Stock versions from $9.99.
• Waheguru and Gurbani lines. Text decals in Gurmukhi script, usually cut vinyl on the rear windshield. These sell as steadily as Ik Onkar, often as a pair with it.
• Punjabi last names. From $7.99: your family name in Gurmukhi or stylized English lettering, typically as a rear windshield banner or small quarter-glass decal. The most common custom request we get.
• Punjab map decals. Outline or filled Punjab map, sometimes combined with text or a graphic. Stock map stickers from $9.99; custom map-plus-text designs from $13.99.
• Artist logos. Sidhu Moosewala logo stickers ($9.99) are the consistent best-seller in this category, along with other Punjabi music fan designs. Fan culture is the engine of half our decal wall.
• JATTLYF and text decals. Lifestyle slogans and phrases in stylized lettering. Cut vinyl looks far better than print for these, sharp edges at any size.
• Religious figures. Baba Deep Singh ji and Sant ji decals ($12.99-$14.99), usually larger format for the back glass. These are printed and laminated because of the artwork detail.
• Truck and commercial decals. Larger back-glass designs, company names, and "my other ride" style decals. Prices run $12.99-$19.99 depending on size.

Vinyl quality: what separates good from junk

All vinyl is not equal, and the failures are always the same: fading, edge lift, and adhesive residue. Here is what to check.

• Outdoor-grade vinyl. Car decals live outside, so the film must be rated for outdoor use (UV-stable, waterproof adhesive). Indoor vinyl is cheaper and peels within a season. Everything we sell is outdoor grade.
• Lamination on printed stickers. A laminated print has a clear protective film over the ink. Without it, UV fades the colours in one or two summers. If a cheap sticker fades fast, it was unlaminated.
• Cut vinyl for text. Lettering cut from solid coloured film (white, black, gold, chrome, reflective) never fades because there is no ink to fade. This is why text decals outlast printed ones.
• Adhesive type. Removable adhesive lifts clean; permanent adhesive holds longer but can leave residue after years in the sun. For car glass, quality removable-grade vinyl is the right call, and we do not sell permanent-adhesive decals for cars.
• Reflective options. Reflective white, gold and chrome films light up at night under headlights. Popular for last-name banners and Ik Onkar decals. They cost a little more and are worth it on dark-tinted glass, where plain white can disappear.

A practical rule: if a vinyl sticker costs less than a coffee and has full-colour art with no laminate, treat it as disposable. The $9.99 to $14.99 tier is where the quality lives: outdoor vinyl, proper adhesive, colours that survive Ontario.

Size guide and where to place them

Measure the glass before you buy, not after. Common sizes and their homes:

• 4 to 6 inches: rear quarter windows and rear side glass. Perfect for Ik Onkar, small Khanda, or a last name in one word. This is the most-bought size.
• 8 to 12 inches: rear windshield, centred or offset. Last-name banners, Waheguru text, Punjab maps. Leaves the wiper sweep clear.
• Windshield strips: across the top of the front windshield. Legal in Ontario as long as they stay above the wiper sweep and out of the driver's direct view. The top few inches are yours; the rest is not.
• Large back-glass designs (12+ inches): trucks and SUVs with big rear glass. These are the ones worth having applied in-store, because air bubbles on a 20-inch design are hard to fix at home.

Never cover the VIN plate, inspection or registration labels, or the third brake light area on the rear glass. And the safety rule from our car dori guide applies here too: nothing between the driver and the road. The same visibility logic governs windshield and window rules in Ontario.

Applying a sticker or decal yourself

Small decals take five minutes and one steady hand. Large ones take twenty and a helper. The method:

• Clean the glass properly. Wash, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Any wax or film left on the glass is why decals lift later.
• Work in the shade, above 10 degrees. Adhesive bonds badly in direct hot sun and barely bonds in the cold. A shaded driveway on a mild day is ideal. Give it 48 hours before washing the car.
• Dry-fit first. Hold the design up with painter's tape and step back. Centre it. This is the step everyone skips and regrets.
• Peel-and-stick method (stickers): peel a corner of the backing, align the top edge, and press down while pulling the backing away, smoothing from the centre outward with a credit card wrapped in a soft cloth.
• Transfer-tape method (decals): squeegee the tape side first so the vinyl sticks to the tape, peel the backing away, position the whole thing on the glass, squeegee firmly from centre out, then peel the transfer tape back at a sharp angle, slowly.
• Wet method for large decals: mist the glass with water and a drop of dish soap before positioning. It lets you slide the decal into place. Squeegee the water out from under it and let it cure 24 hours.

What affects the price

• Size. The obvious one. A 6-inch Ik Onkar and a 24-inch back-glass design are different products with different prices.
• Printed vs cut. Printed stickers cost more to make in full colour; cut vinyl costs more in labour for multi-layer designs. Simple single-colour cut decals are the best value per inch.
• Special films. Reflective, chrome, holographic and colour-shift films cost more than standard white, black or gold vinyl.
• Lamination. Laminated prints last years longer, and the laminate is part of the cost. Worth paying for.
• Quantity. Singles are full price; multiples of the same design (wedding cars, truck fleets, event giveaways) get bulk pricing. Call 647-578-5123 with the quantity and date.

Removal and winter care

Quality vinyl lasts 3 to 5 years on a car in Ontario, then it starts looking tired: edges lift, colours dull. Removal is easy if you do it right: warm the decal with a hair dryer or heat gun on low (not a heat gun on high, which can crack glass in winter), peel slowly at a low angle, and wipe any adhesive residue with a citrus-based adhesive remover. Never scrape with a razor on tinted windows; you will cut the tint film. Laminated and cut-vinyl designs remove cleaner than cheap unlaminated prints, which tend to come off in flakes.

Winter care is simple: touchless car washes are fine, but keep the high-pressure wand away from decal edges, and avoid ice scrapers dragging across decals on the rear glass. The biggest killer is not the cold but sun plus time, so a car parked facing south in Brampton will age decals faster than a garaged one. When a decal has served its time, peel it off and replace it. That is the whole point of vinyl.
