What a car dori actually is

A car dori is a decorative hanging looped over the rear-view mirror stem. The word comes from the thread cord itself, the kalava or kalari thread tied for blessings, and it grew from there into a whole category: beaded strands, metal pendants, tassels and dreamcatchers. In Punjabi car culture it is a personal signature on the car, the same way a custom decal is. Most people buy one for faith, one for style, or both.

Religious hangings carry Ik Onkar, the Khanda, Waheguru or the Sikh emblem in metal or laser-cut acrylic. Decorative ones run from simple dori tassels to evil-eye (nazar battu) beads, dreamcatchers and photo frames. There is no wrong choice, but there are real differences in quality, and that is what this guide is about.

Types of hangings, explained

• Thread dori (tassel). The classic. Light, soft, zero risk to the glass, and cheap enough to swap with the seasons or the car. If you have never bought one, start here.
• Beaded dori. Thread or cord strung with beads, rudraksha-style or glass. A little more presence than plain thread, still light and glass-safe.
• Metal pendants (Ik Onkar, Khanda, Waheguru). Die-cast or laser-cut, usually gold, silver or antique finish. These are the keepsake pieces: heavier, detailed, and the ones people move from car to car.
• Acrylic laser-cut pieces. Sharp detail, light weight, and colour options metal cannot do. Good middle ground between thread and metal.
• Dreamcatchers & evil eye. Purely decorative. The nazar battu (evil eye) bead strands are popular gifts; dreamcatchers suit drivers who want something softer and bigger.
• Photo frames. Small clip frames for a family photo or a gurdwara image. Lovely, but keep them flat and small so they do not swing like a pendulum.

Materials: what separates good from junk

The $4.99 thread dori and the $29.99 metal piece are not competing with each other, but within each tier quality varies a lot, and the failures are always the same.

• Thread: look for tight, even braiding and colourfast dye. Loose braid unravels in a hot car within a month.
• Metal: plating quality is everything. Thin gold-tone paint flakes off the edges in one summer; proper plating survives years. Pick it up: a well-made pendant has weight.
• Acrylic: edges should be flame-polished smooth, not rough-cut. Rough edges go cloudy.
• Beads: knotted between each bead, not just strung. Knotting means one broken bead does not empty the whole strand onto your dashboard.

A practical rule: if a metal pendant costs less than a coffee, the finish will not survive an Ontario summer of UV and dashboard heat. Buy the better piece once instead of the cheap one three times.

Size and position: the safety part

This matters more than the style. Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, section 73(1)(b), says no person shall drive with anything that may obstruct the driver's view of the roadway. Police do not pull people over for a small dori, but a big dreamcatcher swinging across the windshield is a genuine visibility problem and a genuine ticket risk.

• Keep it short. The hanging should sit behind the mirror housing, not dangle down into your line of sight.
• Keep it centred. Loop it on the mirror stem so it rests against the mirror, not off to one side where it swings.
• Keep it light. Heavy pendants swing harder over speed bumps and potholes, and they are the ones that tap the glass.
• Nothing on the windshield itself. Loop, never glue. Suction-cup hangers and adhesive hooks damage the glass coating and leave residue.

The same visibility logic applies to windshield and window rules in Ontario: anything between you and the road should be small and out of the sweep of the wipers.

How to hang it properly

Loop the cord over the mirror stem (the arm between the windshield mount and the mirror body), not over the mirror glass. Most dori come with an adjustable slip loop: slide it to length, centre the pendant behind the mirror, and give it a test swing. If it taps the glass on a speed bump, shorten it. If you swap cars, take the loop off and re-fit it; the cord stretches a little with use, so re-check the length every few months.

One tip from the shop floor: in winter, a metal pendant gets ice cold and can fog a small patch of the windshield where it rests against the glass. Tuck it fully behind the mirror housing and it never touches the glass at all.

Care and cleaning

Thread dori collect dust: shake them out monthly, and hand-wash in cold water with mild soap if they go dull, then air dry. Metal pieces get a wipe with a dry microfibre; skip the jewellery polish, which strips plating faster than it shines it. Acrylic scratches if you look at it wrong, so wipe only with a damp soft cloth, never paper towel. And the obvious one: do not hang anything wet or freshly washed on the mirror, the drip marks bake onto the glass in summer sun.
