Ceramic coating in Ontario: what it costs, how long it lasts, and whether it's worth it

What you'll actually pay

What ceramic coating actually does

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds to your paint and cures into a hard, glass-like layer. Once it's on, you get:

• Hydrophobic surface. Water beads and sheets off instead of sitting. Dirt and salt rinse away far easier.
• UV resistance. Slows the oxidation and fading that dulls paint over Ontario summers.
• Chemical resistance. Road salt, brine, bird droppings and bug splatter don't bond to the paint the same way.
• Gloss. That deep, wet look — though most of it comes from the prep work underneath, not the bottle.

What it doesn't do

This is where shops oversell. Ceramic coating does not stop rock chips — it's microns thin. A stone off a 410 truck will go straight through it. If chip protection is the goal, you want paint protection film (PPF), which is a physical urethane barrier. It also doesn't make your car scratch-proof or maintenance-free: you still wash it, just less often and with less effort. We break down the full comparison in our PPF vs ceramic coating guide.

How long it lasts in Ontario

Two to five years is the honest range for a daily driver here. What moves you up or down that range:

• Winter salt. Doesn't destroy the coating, but a salt-caked car that sits unwashed for weeks degrades everything faster. Wash more in winter, not less.
• How you wash. Touchless or hand wash only. Automatic brush washes are the number one coating killer — the brushes abrade the layer off.
• Garage vs street parking. UV and freeze-thaw cycles wear coatings down; garaged cars hold them noticeably longer.
• The prep. A coating over uncorrected, contaminated paint fails early. Decontamination and at least a light polish beforehand matter more than the brand in the bottle.

Is it worth it for your car?

Yes, if: you plan to keep the car 3+ years, you drive daily on salted highways, your car sits outside, or you just want washing to take half the time.

Probably not, if: you're selling within a year or two, the paint is already rough (fix that first), or you'd rather put the money toward PPF on the front end where the rocks actually hit.

The sweet spot for a lot of our customers is both: PPF on the high-impact areas, ceramic coating over everything for gloss and easy maintenance.
