Disc horns are the sweet spot for most people: big sound upgrade, simple install, no extra hardware to mount. Air horns are the full send — they need space for a compressor and tank, which trucks and SUVs have and compact cars often don't.
What's legal in Ontario
Straight facts: Ontario law requires a working horn on your vehicle. The horn itself — Roots, trumpet, or air — isn't banned. What is regulated is use: sounding your horn unnecessarily, or using an extremely loud horn to harass other drivers, can absolutely draw a ticket. A loud horn you use responsibly is fine; a loud horn you lean on in traffic jams is asking for police attention. Install it, use it like an adult.
How installation works
- Mounting. Behind the grille or in the stock horn location, aimed to project forward and protected from direct road spray.
- Relay. The critical part: a relay lets the horn draw full current straight from the battery without overloading your factory wiring or the steering-wheel switch. Skipping the relay is how DIY installs melt things.
- Wiring. Fused, loomed, and routed away from heat and moving parts.
- Air horns: plus compressor mounting, tank placement, and air line routing — usually under the hood or in the truck bed area.
